The 9th Bro. E. T. Dunne Inter-School English Debate Competition

‘For good ideas and innovation, you need human interaction, conflict, argument and debate.’

In today’s competitive world where excellence is a cliché, everybody wants an edge over others for being successful. With a vision to make the students future ready, Mount St. Mary’s School physically hosted ‘The 9th Brother E.T. Dunne Inter-School English Debate Competition’ on 6th August 2022 for students of classes VI to VIII, after two years of online conduct. An enthusiastic and overwhelming response was received from 17 reputed schools of North India. Under the able guidance of our honourable Principal Rev Brother Tomy Varghese, the contestants received a platform where they couldthink rationally, speak logically, broaden their knowledge and learn to respect other’s opinion.

The topic for debate was ‘Ban on single use plastic- Timely intervention or hasty decision’. India had imposed a blanket ban on single use plastic items on

1st July 2022 in order to stop its ubiquitous use. Is this the way ahead for India’s journey to manage the plastic menace? With this thought the debaters flexed their analytical muscles and came up with rational and reasoned arguments while displaying splendid oratory skills with great rhetorical eloquence. The DEVIL’S ADVOCATE conducted the interjections and rebuttals in the most cordial manner.  The arguments were refuted and questions were defended with great conviction. The Chief Guest for the occasion was Ms. Puneeta Roy, an eminent media person and a social worker. The debate was judged by erudite educationist.
